On Friday, February 10, there was a University of Missouri Columbia Health Care Finances Meeting, and a students protest happening on MU's campus at the same time. Because of the great relevance of these two events, we decided to put the two stories together after talking to other departments, even though they have separate text stories. The main problem I faced in this editing was choosing between the photos of the two stories. It is not common for Columbia Missourian to combine two different stories on the same photo page.
To ensure that the visuals in the paper didn't feel biased towards either story, I selected an almost equal number of photos from both events for print. The image of the leader speaking during the protest and the photo of the girl covering her mouth with a strap-on during the meeting were undoubtedly the two most substantial photos of the day.
After discussing with the designer, we set one as the cover photo of the newspaper and the other enlarged to the largest size and placed it at the bottom of the photo page. This design can emphasize the same importance of both stories.
